In collaboration with the School of Education and Educational Leadership Department we have adapted SUNY Buffalo State's Teacher Leader, Certificate of Advanced Study for international educators. We are excited to announce that the first international Teacher Leader C.A.S. cohort will begin in late spring of 2021.
The Teacher Leader courses address the many powerful ways teachers can, as leaders, meet what a coalition of State Education Chiefs and District Superintendents (called Chiefs for Change) have outlined as three key challenges: affect education policy, create constant improvement through innovative practices, and solve critical issues in schools and districts. Our office is excited to offer IGPE alumni the opportunity to continue learning and advance their understanding of our everchanging educational landscape. Please note that students must have completed their master’s degree prior to being considered for the certificate of advanced study.
Schools have adopted organizational structures critical to student learning and continuous school improvement that include team leaders, heads of departments and other leadership roles for teachers. Empowering high-performing teachers as Teacher Leaders allows for the demonstration of dispositions, skill and knowledge in effective problem solving, facilitating change, and modeling best practices to foster a culture of innovation and shared responsibility to improve the whole education system. This requires a shift in the culture of the organization and elevates the teaching profession. Model Standards described by the NEA include key domains related to these effective teacher leader areas including fostering a collaborative culture, using research and promoting professional learning, facilitating instructional improvements, effective use of assessment, outreach and advocating for student learning.
C.A.S. students will complete the below 4 courses:
EDL 559 PRINCIPLES IN CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING (3 credit hours)
EDL 607 SITE-BASED LEADERSHIP (3 credit hours)
EDL 630 CURRICULUM LEADERSHIP (3 credit hours)
EDL 702 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP FIELD EXPERIENCES (1 credit hour)
Total: 10 credit hours
Unique to the Teacher Leader program is deliberate training in creative problem solving, a strong curriculum leadership component as well as a thorough understanding of the needs of site-based leader. A capstone experience in the field allows for implementation of key skills and knowledge gained in the program.
